Independence Meal Plans

George Mason University is proud to present the Independence meal plans. This type of community dining offers healthy options and unlimited access into the dining halls 24 hours a day. Each plan comes equipped with three guest meals per semester which can be used to treat friends or visiting relatives. Bonus funds are purchased as part of the meal plan and can be used at all dining venues on campus. Bonus funds may also be used to purchase additional entries to the dining halls after the three guest meals have been used. Students will receive a $2 discount off the door price at each of the three resident dining halls when paying for a guest’s entry with Bonus Funds. The Independence plans can be accessed using the Mason ID or the Iris Camera System.

The Independence meal plans are accepted in the following locations:

Fairfax Campus

Unlimited Access in Ike’s, the Globe, and Southside

One Daily Swipe in Simply-to-Go

Arlington and Science Technology Campuses

Two Daily Swipes

The Independence Extended is recommended for students staying on campus over Thanksgiving and/or spring break or who need to move on campus before the fall semester begins.

The Independence Ultimate is recommended for students who need to move on campus before or remain on campus after fall and/or spring classes are out of session.

Freshmen and sophomores living on campus without a full kitchen in their residence are required to participate in the Independence Meal Plan Program. Students living on campus in areas with full kitchens are exempt from meal plans.

Step 2: Choose the amount of Bonus Funds

Bonus funds offer dollar-for-dollar purchasing power in all dining venues on all campuses. A complete list of venues can be viewed on the Mason Dining website. Students will also receive a $2 discount off the door price at each of the three resident dining halls when paying for a guest’s entry with Bonus Funds. The funds can be increased by upgrading to the next $100 increment. Remaining balances from the fall semester will roll over to the spring semester. Bonus funds must be used by the end of the spring semester.

Step 3: Calculate Total Semester Price

To determine the total cost of your meal plan, add the base price of your chosen Independence plan to your choice of Bonus amount.

Ex: Independence Extended + $200 Bonus → $2,135 + $200 = $2,335

Liberty Meal Plans (New)

New this semester are the Liberty Plans which come equipped with Flex funds. Juniors and seniors are welcome to select either the Liberty or Independence Meal Plans.

Liberty meal swipes are accepted in the dining halls (Ike’s, the Globe, and Southside), one swipe a day in Simply-to-Go, and two swipes a day on the Arlington and Science Technology campuses. Remaining swipes should be used within the week. The balances reset on Saturday morning at 5am.

Flex funds offer dollar-for-dollar purchasing power in all dining venues on all campuses. A complete list of venues can be viewed on the Mason Dining website. Students will receive a $2 discount off the door price at each of the three resident dining halls when paying for entry with Flex Funds. Flex funds will roll over to the to the spring semester. Be sure to budget accordingly; the semester is approximately 16 weeks. The funds become active a week prior to the start of class.

Off-Campus Students and Campus Residents with Full Kitchens

Freedom funds and Patriot Meal Plans are perfect for students visiting campus each day or living in areas with full kitchens. These meal plans are billed to the student account and offer tax-exempt dining. Off-campus students are also welcome to purchase either an Independence or Liberty dining plan if they wish to do so.

Freedom Funds

Freedom Funds offer dollar-for-dollar purchasing power in all dining locations on all three campuses. Students will receive a $2 discount off the door price at each of the three resident dining halls when paying for entry with Freedom Funds. These plans are targeted for students on-the-go who can budget the funds throughout the 16-week semester. The funds are available approximately one week prior to the first day of class and active throughout the entire semester. Remaining balances will roll over from fall to spring. All funds must be used by the end of the spring semester.

Patriot Meal Plans

Patriot Meal Plans can be used  in the dining halls (Ike’s, the Globe, Southside), one swipe a day in Simply-to-Go, and two swipes a day on the Arlington and Science Technology campuses. Remaining meal plan swipes will roll over from the fall to the spring semester. Bonus funds are purchased together with the meal plan, in $100 increments.

Adding, Changing, and Dropping Meal Plans

Students living on-campus can add, change, or drop your own meal plan online. Press either of the buttons above or follow this link to the Online Card Office.

If there are any issues with the online system, please email the Mason Card Office from a masonlive email account. Be sure to include name, G number, and meal plan request.

Students living off-campus must notify the Mason Card Office via email that they are living off-campus and would like access to meal plans (include a G-number) before logging in to make any meal plan changes.

 

FAQs

Q.  What is the difference between Bonus, Freedom, and Flex funds?

A.  Bonus from the Independence plan and Freedom roll over from the fall to the spring semester. Bonus funds are partnered with the Independence and Patriot Plans. Freedom funds are purchased as a separate plan. Both Bonus and Freedom can be upgraded throughout the semester.

Flex funds are partnered with the Liberty Plans. They will roll over from fall to spring.

Q.  Do Bonus funds have to be purchased?

A.  Yes and No – Bonus funds have to be purchased with the Independence and Patriot Plans. The default amount is $100, should an amount not be requested. Additional Bonus funds are not required if a second Patriot meal plan is purchased within the same semester.

Q.  How do I access my meal plan?

A.  The Mason ID is used to access meal plan swipes, Bonus, Freedom, and Flex funds. The Iris Camera System can be used to access meal swipes.

Q.  When will I receive my rollover funds?

A. Freedom and Bonus from the fall semester will be posted approximately two weeks after the census date.  This is the last date to lower or drop meal plans. Students will be notified via email when the rollover funds become available for access.

Q. Why aren’t Liberty Plans an option for freshmen and sophomores?

A.  The university feels that the Independence plan is instrumental in acclimating freshmen and sophomores to campus life.  Not only will it enhance community living, but it will also ensure healthy dining choices are available at every meal.

Q.  Are graduate students required to have a meal plan?

A.  Yes, graduate students living in areas without full kitchens are required select one of the Liberty or Independence plans.

Q. What are the areas with full kitchens?

A.  Apartments | Liberty Square | Northern Neck | Potomac Heights | Rogers | Townhouse

Billing

Meal plans offer tax-exempt dining and are billed to the student account which may be viewed on Patriot Web.

Policy

If a meal plan is required and has not been selected, the Independence + $100 bonus will be assigned by default. Meal plans are intended for personal use and can be accessed with the Mason ID or the Iris Camera System. Mason IDs will be turned in to the Dean of Student’s Office if they are being used by other individuals.
